Most of you have heard people say, “Boy, that really sticks in my craw.” If you haven’t, it means that something bothers or annoys somebody…a lot.

Those who have heard it before probably, like me, have no idea what the literal meaning of something getting stuck in your craw is. Well, now you do.

What’s a craw?

Craw is an old-fashioned word for the crop of a bird — the organ in its neck containing grit that grinds up hard food. If something like a very hard nut or an over-large bone lodges in the crop and the grinding system can’t cope with it, it causes the bird great discomfort and often causes death, either because the crop swells and chokes the bird or because the bird starves.

So, metaphorically, we can say that certain actions or situations “stick in our craw” when we can’t bring ourselves to get past them. They get “stuck” in us, causing psychic discomfort.

Why am I writing about this? Because it presents a golden opportunity for spiritual and emotional growth.
