It makes perfect sense to me and came at a good time today to remind myself of all the times I’ve handled things. You make these teachings very accessible. Thank you!

Namaste and blessings,

RQ

Excellent piece! (I hope the Asia trip was as amazing as it sounds!) I want to print it in multiple copies and hang it all around the house - I’ve handled it before, stop the worry; I feel the AA, calm it and remind, I got this! (I honestly needed this right now, as a large kink just got tossed into my upcoming travel 😳)

Yes! Just keep reminding yourself whenever you get an anxious travel thought (or really any anxious thought - article coming in a few weeks on that!), “I’ve handled it before, so why get all spun up now?”

Trip was great…most importantly, for the kids. Only unfortunate part is that my nine year old is now hooked on Wagyu which is cheap in Japan but will bankrupt us back in the US of A!!!

A long time ago in counseling, we walked through how terrified I was (at the time) of a relapse of my illness. In a lot of ways, the fear is so overwhelming, I don’t even think about it. But at the moment, it was gnawing at me. My counselor’s advice was: You have no control over this, so you can’t let it terrorize you. All you need to focus on is how you overcame it once and will figure out how to do so again! That’s always stuck with me on such a large scale. I love how your advice is so easy for the day-to-day that can also tangle me. Nothing like wasting a worry, ahhem, AA! Haha! A girl with expensive beef taste is a girl after my own heart. I imagine it was a trip for the ages with all 5 of you, pre changes of college!

Another good column David, as usual. "I can handle it" is good advice for most AA situations. However, the challenge becomes enormous if the situation is dealing with a health crisis for you or a loved one. Or, if you're on your death bed. I guess practicing with this mantra on a daily basis with typical run-of-the-mill type stressors could help you build the strength to the point where it is helpful on the really big stressors.

Great point, Ken. I'm actually going to write a separate article in the coming weeks about using the 'handling it' thing for the big stressors.
